Portland synagogue prays for hostages release, peace

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — As hopeful signs emerge about the end of the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, a Portland synagogue held a gathering to mark the release of the hostages.

Congregation Neveh Shalom organized a “powerful night of music and verse, commemorating the poignant end of the Swords of Iron War,” the group Jewish PDX posted on their Facebook page. It was a non-political event and registration was required to attend.

Organizers suggested “bags, backpacks, briefcases and purses” should be left in the car or at home, and that all hand-carried items into the synagogue would be inspected.

Speakers emphasized the need for continued peace and to support everyone affected in the conflict.

“We pray: Let this be the moment that captivity ends, when those held in darkness walk free, when mothers and fathers are gathered back into the arms that love them. when they feel safe,” said Marc Blattner, the President/CEO of the Jewish Federation of Greater Portland. “May the coming days bring healing to the wounded, comfort to the bereaved and peace — true and lasting peace to Israel and to all who dwell upon this Earth.”

The Swords of Iron War was the official Israeli name of the war that began October 7, 2023 when Hamas militants killed nearly 1200 people and took hundreds of hostages in a brazen daylight strike. But on Sunday, the Israeli government voted in favor of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s proposal to change the name from Operation Swords of Iron to the War of Revival.

Netanyahu added the War of Revival will now be the official name used on “medals of valor and commendations to our brave soldiers and commanders,” which he said are currently being prepared, the Jerusalem Post reported.

Israel on Sunday identified the remains of two more hostages recently handed over by Hamas. The remains of another 16 hostages are still unaccounted.
