Manual High School celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — Several different aspects of Hispanic culture were celebrated at Manual High School Wednesday night with a special event.

The event was held at the high school’s auditorium, celebrating fashion, dance, music, and other parts of Hispanic culture.

Several different countries were discussed as well, including Honduras, Venezuela, and El Salvador.

Cesar Vargas attended Manual and was a volunteer for the event. He reflected on how Peoria’s Hispanic population has grown since he was a high schooler.

“The community has grown so much. We’re not only celebrating Mexican culture but also Honduran, Salvadoran, Dominican, Puerto Rican at the school. Being an alumni at this school, we didn’t see that back in the day,” he said.

He also credited teacher Kristen Bailey for coordinating the event, which included a lot of student involvement.

This was part of Manual’s Hispanic Heritage Spirit Week, which ends Friday.
